The Most Family-Friendly Coastal Walks in North Wales | Ruthin Castle

No matter the season, there’s often nothing quite like taking a brisk walk along the coast to lift your spirits. What’s even better is taking this time to spend with your family. North Wales has miles after miles of breathtaking coastline, with everything from sandy beaches to impressive clifftops, making it ideal for a short jaunt or a longer, more challenging, hike.

The Talacre Circular Walk

This walk is short and sweet. Taking about an hour to complete, it’ll take you along the sandy beach at Talacre to the Point of Ayr lighthouse, which makes a picture-perfect snapshot. There are boardwalks along the majority of the walk, making it an easy one if you have small children, but you’ll also have the chance to explore the sand dunes if the weather permits.

The beach is dog-friendly all year round so you can bring your four-legged friend along too and, depending on the season, keep your eyes peeled for some of the migrating wading birds and natterjack toads. Once you’ve enjoyed your walk, Talacre Village isn’t too far away and has a few cafes and pubs if you want to grab a drink or something to eat.

Getting here from Ruthin Castle: Talacre is only a 45 minute drive away from the castle via the A525.

The Seaside Town of Rhyl to Pensarn Beach

If you’ve come to North Wales hoping to stumble upon a quaint seaside town then Rhyl won’t disappoint you. The walk along the promenade to Pensarn Beach takes around an hour and a half but it’s completely flat and full of impressive sights. As you walk, you’ll see Snowdonia, the hills of the Vale of Clwyd and the Sky Tower which, at night, can be seen for miles around thanks to its ever-changing colours.

Walk across Pont y Ddraig (Dragon Bridge) and you’ll find the Three Icons of Rhyl. Can you name them all? Soon you’ll reach the beaches of Kinmel Bay and Towyn where you can take a ride at the funfair before relaxing on Pensarn Beach.

Getting here from Ruthin Castle: Follow the A525 for only 18.5 miles and you’ll reach Rhyl on the coast.

The North Shore of Lllandudno

Depending on how far your legs can carry you, this walk can be as long and as challenging as you wish. A great place to start is the North Shore promenade where the children can be entertained for a while with a classic Punch and Judy show at the longest pier in Wales.

If you’re feeling up the challenge, try the circuit of Great Orme which, although hilly in some spots, has a pavement for easy access. Wildlife lovers will be pleased to know that this area is home to a herd of Kashmiri goats, rare Peregrine falcons and sometimes seals who play in the shallows. Further along, the West Shore will start to appear.

We recommend around 3 hours is needed to complete this walk in its entirety but for the stunning views of Angelsey, Snowdonia and the Conwy Estuary it’s definitely worth it!

Getting here from Ruthin Castle: Follow the North Wales Expy for 52 minutes (33.5 miles) and you’ll reach Llandudno, passing Colwyn Bay on the way.
