The Great Gatehouse Restoration

The Great Gatehouse before restoration work began

A fascinating morning with the teams from the Ruthin Castle Conservation Trust, Cadw, and IBEX Technical Access LTD, learning of their progress with the restoration of our historic Great Gatehouse here at the Castle

Established in 2016, the Trust was established with the aim to conserve as much of the ruins within the grounds as possible. The Castle has a long and fascinating history, dating back to its construction in the late 1280s. This section of the hotel dates back to Medieval times, if not earlier.

The amazing team

At the start of the year, the Great Gatehouse was completely covered in thick vegetation (see image above) and slowly decaying, so to see this historically significant building slowly come back to life so to speak, was very interesting. Lots of work still to do here and around the estate, the end goal being to present the Castle to the public (both local and further afield), as a site of genuine historical interest that it undoubtedly is

The teams are back in the Spring when the dry and warmer weather returns, to continue the work. We’re already looking forward to seeing more great progress
